But Why Is It Art? (foundation level seminar)

This introductory seminar examines the key themes, concepts, and questions that affect the practice of contemporary art. We will look at specific cases in the development of art and culture since 1900 to understand why and how contemporary art can exist as such a wide-ranging set of forms, media, approaches, and cultural struggles. Sculpture Concepts (2nd-year seminar/studio)

Sculpture Concepts examines a number of sculptural tendencies that are relevant to contemporary art through readings, screenings, discussions, studio assignments, and critiques. Syllabus

Art and Activism (2nd-year seminar/studio)

This course explores contemporary artistic practices that blur the boundary between art and activism. We will examine how artists address political issues and the techniques they use to reach different types of audiences. Students will do research and develop projects that address specific local issues and wider social concerns. Syllabus

Expanded Portraiture (2nd-year seminar/studio)

Expanded Portraiture attempts to stretch the traditional idea of portraiture, exploring different methods and media for representing identity and the self. We will look at the role of facial representations in painting and photography and then move beyond the pictorial to consider how sound, text, moving images, and objects can be used to create new encounters with the subject. Installation (2nd-year studio)

This studio/seminar explores installation art in interior spaces, with a special focus on site-specific museum projects and architectural interventions. Student projects may incorporate a variety of media including photography, painting/drawing, video, audio and sculptural materials in works that expand the physical boundaries of art beyond the object. Theory and Practice: Three Dimensional Work (3rd-year seminar/studio)

Theory and Practice: Three Dimensional Work engages with a more complex set of topics relevant to the production and theorization of contemporary sculptural practice. The course will combine readings, screenings, discussions, writing assignments, studio assignments, and critiques. Syllabus

Theory and Practice: Global Art Strategies (3rd-year seminar/studio)

The course focuses on the increasing globalization of contemporary art practices. This course will examine the influence of colonial histories, migration, international media, cultural exchange and tourism in the works of international artists. Students will be asked to reflect on their own culturally diverse backgrounds as a source for conceptually based art projects. Syllabus

Advanced Video (3rd-year studio)

An advanced course focusing on complex video techniques and contemporary presentation strategies. The course will cover such areas as video projection, multi-channel works, feature length projects and advanced post-production techniques. Syllabus

Advanced Seminar: Three Dimensional Work (4th-year seminar/studio)

This studio-seminar will address advanced contemporary issues in sculpture and installation art through independent art production, research, critiques, discussions, and assigned readings. Students are expected to develop a body of exhibition quality work and professional support materials. Syllabus
